“Dickinson Dees LLP has a strong track record in local government work, specialist housing litigation and particularly Building Schools for the Future projects, where it has received more public sector instructions for Wave 1 projects than any other firm in the country.”

“Clients have a ‘very high overall confidence’ in the team.”

Legal 500 2007

Local Government is diverse, and as such, in order to provide a full service to this sector Dickinson Dees needs to be able to provide distinct specialist advice directly relevant to each area.

Accordingly, Dickinson Dees local government group spans the breadth of the firm encompassing niche practice areas including Projects, Planning, Economic Regeneration, Social Housing, Environmental, Education, Housing Litigation, Commercial Property, Insurance Litigation, Employment and IT. Many of the lawyers within the group have a local authority background and as such bring an invaluable insider’s perspective to the way in which we approach both our clients and our instructions.

The firm’s core work for this sector has centred around Projects (PPP, BSF & PFI) which on a regular basis requires significant input from many diverse practice areas, and housing litigation (ASBOs, Injunctions, housing disrepair claims etc) which by its nature is more self contained. There are of course many other areas where advice and assistance is sought and given, for example equal pay claims from our employment team, or waste management or licensing issues from our environmental team, outsourcing of IT from our commercial team. Taking all of the niche practice areas together we are able to provide a composite service to our clients.

With the emphasis for local government, as with all public sector institutions, on improving efficiency increasingly our clients in this area require practical assistance in addition to purely legal services. We regularly provide training sessions for our clients and empower them to be able to tackle certain issues without recourse to legal advisors. We provide lawyers to work alongside our local government client departments to both assist with reducing overwhelming workloads and to provide “on the job” training, leading to greater efficiency on our client’s part, and understanding on our part. In addition, we produce on a quarterly basis, a newsletter specifically designed for our clients in this sector which addresses and comments on statute, case law and developments taking place across the breadth of the local authority group.
