Expertise

    Simon has over twenty years experience as a construction lawyer. He is primarily involved in dispute resolution work, specialising in PFI/PPP and infrastructure disputes, and is an accredited mediator and adjudicator. He is head of the firm’s Construction and Engineering Group, responsible for co-ordinating the firm’s strategy in relation to construction projects. He is a visiting lecturer at the School of the Built Environment at Northumbria University and has helped to devise the construction law module of its MSc in Project Management. He is presently engaged in preparing a distance learning course in construction law and practice for the School. He also administers the construction law module of two distance learning Masters degrees for the School of Law at the University.

 

Experience

• advising a major transport sector client in relation to disputes concerning rail infrastructure work in excess of £28 million;

• advising a major international contractor in relation to various disputes covering a wide variety of issues such as mechanical and electrical engineering and health sector PFI projects;

• acting for a privatised utility company in relation to various engineering disputes;

• advising a Primary Care Trust in relation to a dispute with a contractor under the Procure 21 initiative;

• advising a heavy engineering contractor on a number of disputes in litigation and arbitration in the UK and abroad;

• advising a client in connection with a multi-million pound claim relating to the fabrication of an offshore facility;

• acting as a mediator in a number of construction disputes.

Additional Information

Simon writes and lectures regularly on construction and PFI/PPP issues. He is past General Editor of and contributor to Tolley's Guide to Construction Contracts, has a regular column in Building magazine and has written regularly for Construction Law.

Graduated from Bristol University with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Law. Qualified as a solicitor with a practice in the West End of London in 1986, moved to a firm in the City in 1988 to specialise in construction law. Moved to Dickinson Dees in 1992 to develop its construction law practice. Became a Partner in 1995. Obtained a Master’s degree in Film Studies in 2004.

Simon is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Society of Construction Law, the Association of Researchers in Construction Management, and the Technology and Construction Solicitors’ Association.
